Krishnamurti, Indian musicians Kuljit Bhamra (tabla), Jonathan Mayer (sitar) and Kartik

Raghunathan, and the BBC Concert Orchestra with conductor Robert Ziegler at their

Raga Mela concert.  The concert will be broadcast on 19 May 2009 at 7pm on BBC Radio 3.

Discovering Music with Fung Lam on BBC Radio 3

The Discovering Music programme that features the premiere of Unlocking by the BBC

Concert Orchestra was broadcast on BBC Radio 3.  It explores Unlocking in detail with

Charles Hazlewood as the presenter.  Through conversation and diary entries which were

recorded during the compositional process, the programme traces how this work was written from its

conception through to the final version of the piece.  Taking inspiration from the exhibition of padlocks

at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Unlocking explores themes of codes, secrets and locks.  The episode also included Illumination, recorded by the BBC Philharmonic in 2005, as well as a new work inspired by Unlocking created by students at an education project with BBCCO and Fraser Trainer.

As part of BBC Radio 3’s Discovering Music programme, Fung was commissioned

to write a new work inspired by artefacts at the Victoria and Albert Museum.  This

new 23-minutes work, entitled Unlocking, was premiered and recorded by the

BBC Concert Orchestra with conductor Charles Hazlewood for broadcast in 2009.

Fung was commissioned by the Southampton University Jazz Orchestra to write a piece for their Composers' Concert featuring all new original music.  The result was a piece that incorporates a large amount of group improvisation.  The "score" consists of 5 pages of instruction.  It featured Fung on the piano at the premiere.
