Biography
With the premiere of his latest orchestral work Unlocking in 2008, Fung Lam became the youngest Chinese composer to have received a commission from BBC Radio 3. Born in Hong Kong in 1979, Fung’s output ranges from original concert and media works to various arrangements. His music has been performed worldwide, at occasions such as Cheltenham Music Festival, BASBWE International Wind Festival, Second Glance Festival, Soundwaves Festival, Asian Composers’ League Asian Music Festivals in 2003, 2004 and 2007, and the inaugural BBC Electric Proms in 2006.
Performers of his music have included the BBC Philharmonic (with James MacMillan), BBC Concert Orchestra (with Charles Hazlewood, Robert Ziegler, and John Wilson), New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (with Li Xin-cao), Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra (with Douglas Bostock), Hong Kong Sinfonietta (with Yip Wing-sie), Hong Kong Festival Wind Orchestra, Carducci Quartet, Grenzenlos, Australian group Halcyon, and cellist Frances-Marie Uitti.
Fung has provided music for various theatre productions, including the Japanese play Festival for the Fish in London in 2004. He also wrote music for the Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) TV documentary series Weather III in 2005, and Philharmonia Orchestra’s virtual orchestra installation at the South Bank Centre in London in 2006. His music has received broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, Radio New Zealand, and RTHK Radio 4.
Fung has experience working with students and young musicians. In 2006, he was involved in BBC Concert Orchestra’s MusicLab project where he worked with students on his orchestration of Sigur Rós’s Glosoli, and in 2008 he was involved in another education project as part of BBC Radio 3’s Discovering Music programme.
Fung has studied with Martin Butler, Michael Finnissy and Michael Zev Gordon.
